When Did Fun Take a Backseat?

As Generation X women, we are masters of juggling responsibilities. From managing careers and households to caring for loved ones, we often prioritise everyone else’s needs before our own. But somewhere along the way, many of us have lost touch with joy and fun. Sure, we laugh with friends occasionally or find moments of enjoyment, but how often do we truly let go and allow ourselves to experience unfiltered happiness?

Life’s pressures often push joy to the sidelines. We tell ourselves we’ll make time for fun “later”—after the kids are settled, the work project is done, or the household is in order. But “later” rarely comes, and the absence of consistent joy takes its toll. Without regular doses of fun, life can start to feel like a series of obligations, leaving us drained, irritable, and disconnected from what once made us feel alive.

This lack of joy doesn’t just impact our emotional well-being; it affects our relationships, creativity, and overall outlook on life. When we deprive ourselves of fun, we risk becoming strangers to the vibrant, carefree parts of ourselves that bring balance and meaning to our lives.

The truth is, joy isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Fun doesn’t have to be grand or time-consuming; it can be as simple as dancing to your favourite song, picking up a long-forgotten hobby, or sharing a heartfelt laugh with a friend. Give yourself permission to prioritise joy, even in small ways. It’s not selfish—it’s essential to living a full, meaningful life.
